Medical Acupuncture

Person receiving acupuncture treatment by inserting a thin needle into their hand while lying down, with a chiropractic clinic setting in the background.

Western Medical Acupuncture, now commonly referred to as Medical Acupuncture, is an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture using the principles of evidence based medicine and knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology. It is used to treatment the symptoms of conditions and is particularly useful in managing pain and treating muscle conditions.

Medical Acupuncture is used to treat conditions including:

  • Back pain

  • Neck pain

  • Knee pain (caused by arthritis)

  • Migraine

  • Tension type headache

Medical Acupuncture can be very effective when used along side chiropractic techniques to treat musculoskeletal conditions. Medical Acupuncture is also used to treat symptoms such as nausea, and is used to manage stress and anxiety.

The treatment may involve manual or low voltage stimulation of the acupuncture needles. The number of needles used, as few as two or three, depends on the condition and individual being treated. You will be given information about acupuncture before the treatment and aftercare advice to support the treatment.
